Digging around in the basement of the Penn Wells Hotel you can find some interesting historic artifacts. One day Company President Ellen Dunham Bryant spied the wood doors that hung in the entrance to the Penn Wells in earlier years. The doors were sent to restoration expert Tyler Mechtley to see if they could be refurbished and reinstalled. Unfortunately, the wood had aged such that they were no longer suited to the task. However, Tyler was able to examine the doors and reproduce the original finish of the historic doors. In addition, the hardware from the original doors was salvaged, cleaned, and reinstalled on the new doors to add to the vintage feel. The doors were hung in the fall, putting them in service in time to appreciate as we recognize the 150th anniversary of the construction of the Penn Wells Hotel in 1869. Thanks to the PA Route 6 Alliance for providing access to façade improvement matching funds for this project.
